ATF bullet-fragment comparison
Evidence Inconclusive Direct Official copy physical
Jacket fragment from autopsy vs the recovered rifle. ATF result: inconclusive. Defense March 2026 filing treated this as a failure to link weapon to wound. It is not an exclusion.
Utah County: not enough marks on the fragment to say the rifle did or did not fire it. Forensic scientists told PolitiFact this is common with deformed fragments. A homicide detective still treats an open ballistic link as a hole. Other evidence (video, DNA, admissions) is what the state uses to fill it. Native ATF report is not archived here yet – news and defense-filing quotations only.
