Accused by the State of Utah of being the lone rooftop shooter. Surrendered 11 Sep 2025 in Washington County. Capital aggravated murder plus related counts. Has not been convicted. Bindover not yet ruled.
Born 16 Apr 2003. No prior criminal record reported at arrest. Family described by relatives as conservative / LDS. Mother told investigators he had “leaned more left” and was dating a person transitioning from male to female (the roommate later identified as Lance Twiggs). Registered to vote, unaffiliated. Lived about 240 miles from UVU.
State theory: he arrived on campus ~8:29 a.m. in a gray Dodge Challenger, returned in different clothes, crossed onto the Losee Center roof ~12:15 p.m., fired one .30-06 round at 12:23:30, dropped from the roof, hid a grandfather’s Mauser-type rifle in woods, texted Twiggs a confession, then surrendered the next evening after parents and a retired deputy arranged it.
Defense at the July 2026 preliminary hearing attacked DNA methods, the ATF’s inconclusive bullet-to-rifle result, and chain of custody. They have not publicly adopted Candace Owens’ claim that he was not the shooter.
